Custom stain matching is a great option for those who have an existing stain and need the same look replicated. In many situations, a pre-mixed stain colour just won’t cut it! Bring in a sample and let our Stain Experts create a new custom stain.
There are many variables that can affect the final colour of a stain. Should it be necessary, we will always work with you to tweak your custom stain.

The approach we take to stain matching will vary depending on what surface you are trying to stain.
If possible, bring in a sample as we might not always have specific types of wood on hand.
How you apply the stain can effect the final appearance.
On new wood, we recommend starting with a 60 grit sand. The wood should feel slightly rough to the touch. Thoroughly clean the wood with a rag/vacuum to get rid of the residue and then follow up with a 120 grit sand. Avoid oversanding as this will close off the pores of the wood.
This is a technique used to open the pores of the wood to create a darker looking stain. Wetting the wood may be recommended on certain woods species that tend to absorb stain unevenly, such as maple or pine.
If unsure, our Stain Experts can make a recommendation based on the desired colour and the surface being stained.
We sell custom stains in the following sizes; pint, quart, half gallon, and gallon.
If you already have the varnish, we would need to know whether you are using an oil or waterbase varnish as well as the sheen as this affects the colour of a stain. Our Stain Experts may recommend a certain type of varnish based on the desired colour of the stain match.
Typically our stain matches take up to 3-4 business days to complete.
